...The addition of dramatic cantilevers helped transform this 1960's brick and tile beach house into a modernist reinvention

The Cottesloe Beach House represents the transformation of a modest 1960s salmon-brick residence into a newly vibrant beach house that responds to the needs of its occupants, while also reflecting on its original design aesthetic with a timeless Modernist reinvention. Craig Steere Architects assisted the clients in the initial selection of this 'renovator's delight', identifying the positive attributes of the original design that could be transformed to become a functional and aesthetic success. The design also helped realize the client's vision to transform what was a small, dark house with limited outlook, into an open, bright and contemporary living space.

With its enviable location on Ozone Parade, Cottesloe, the need to maximize views to the ocean was apparent. The existing front balcony was enlarged with an extended cantilever, similarly the front opening was widened and floor-to-ceiling glass installed. The cantilevered balcony has become a new major feature of the design by virtue of its dramatic form and exposed steel detailing, with its new roof creating excellent sun and storm shelter in this beachside location.
