...Consideration of local environmental conditions, combines with cost effective construction methods to generate contemporary homes for regional WA, with a traditional flavour

Craig Steere Architects have worked in conjunction with local builder, Brolga Developments, to develop affordable housing solutions for the Kimberley Region. These designs are highly functional, cost-effective and builder-friendly, incorporating methods of construction that take advantage of local trades, skills and materials.

Designs are based on maximizing the flexibility and speed of construction of lightweight building methods and utilize steel-framed walls and timber truss roofs clad in corrugated iron.
A strong focus was kept on the traditional concepts of shelter and shade, while the use of louvres and breezeways that allow cross-ventilation and airflow was of particular importance. Decking reinforces the strong connection between indoor and outdoor living, while vegetation and landscaping maximizes the cooling effect of green spaces.

These design concepts have been specifically developed to suit the unique climatic conditions, architectural character and lot sizes of Broome. One of these designs has been selected for construction in the Kimberley's largest display village at Landcorp's first land release at Waranyjarri Estate, Broome North.
