1414 Classical Villa
... A Palladian villa form integrates asymmetrical design elements for a contemporary luxury home
The client had expressed a desire for classical architectural symmetry to the exterior and interior design of their new home. A project brief was developed around the client’s lifestyle and requirements to deliver a custom home design that conveyed a sense of timelessness and in keeping with the character of the neighbourhood. The villa takes cues from classical architecture with colonnades providing rhythm to the external verandah and a razor sharp roof line that gracefully cantilevers.
The home considers its site from all directions, providing a formal approach from the street with a strong axis that leads through the home and culminates at a slim, long feature pool in the back garden. While the home has been designed largely symmetrical, the home is also interjected with asymmetrical design elements to create points of interest. Pockets views to landscaped gardens and courtyards pepper your path through the home. From the first floor, the study enjoys commanding views towards the river, while the balconies offer the ability to watch over the family as they swim in the back garden.
A disciplined palette of materials and colours has been applied throughout, maintaining a sense of timelessness. The same stone flooring was specified to the interiors and exterior verandahs to provide a sense of homogeneity, thus blurring the distinction between inside and outside. The materiality of the home also takes into consideration the client’s personal home decor styling to provide a crisp, warm backdrop on which to furnish against.
A generous verandah to the north and a covered alfresco with operable louvres to the east allows the home to expand its living and dining quarters from inside to outside, with the deep overhangs providing welcome respite from the hot summer sun. High ceilings enhance the spacious rooms and galleries, allowing light to diffuse softly into the interiors. This provides a home that feels light, airy and a pleasure to live and entertain in.
