0410 Wilyabrup Beach

...Linear planes hang from a spinal blade anchor wall, providing a low profiled drama to this rural retreat

Perched high on a ridge and with ocean views to the west and valley views to the north, this family holiday home was designed for a rural block in Wilyabrup, a small town south of Yallingup in Western Australia's south west region. The house was oriented to maximize views whilst also limiting exposure to the harsh western sun and winter storms from the ocean. Located in dense bushland, it was also important for the beach house design and siting to respond to the challenges of building in bush-fire prone areas whilst also retaining natural vegetation on the site.

The beach house has a contemporary expression, characterized by a low-profile rectilinear form which features a dramatic blade wall that anchors the building to the site. The bedrooms are suspended dramatically from the blade wall, appearing to float over the landscape and exposing them to enviable views, whilst the living areas on the opposite side of the wall gain shelter and protection from strong valley winds, whilst also maximizing natural lighting and cross-ventilation.
