AIA (WA) Interior Architecture 2016 WA Architecture Awards Jury Citation:

Bay View House opens seamlessly to a sequence of interconnected open, yet intimate spaces from a point of arrival to the relaxation area at the rear. A sculptural column at the entry, referencing a tree like structure, curves seamlessly into soffit and internal ceiling, and heralds the use of timber insertions throughout two levels to wrap the kitchen area, contain the vanity units, articulate the corridor, as well as the entry to the master bedroom. The resultant warmth complements the restrained palette of stone, water and glass throughout.

Each space clearly distinguishes its function yet provides views through the adjoining areas to those beyond. The integration of the interior with exterior is achieved by attention to the unified materiality, detailing, texture and play of light. The upper level ensures privacy to the occupants while crafting each an individual view to the river. The lower in contrast offers transparency and openness, yet displays sensitive control of scale and proportion in the living, dining and entertaining areas. Attention is also given to ventilation, lighting and grey water. Overall the judges considered this highly liveable piece of art to be an exceptional understated interior that serves the client and their diverse needs with sensitivity to both human occupation and quality in design.

AIA (WA) Residential Architecture – Houses (New) 2016 WA Architecture Awards Jury Citation:

An intelligent, elegant and harmonious architectural response to a stunning site and detailed brief, Bay View House sits symbiotically within its context overlooking Bay View Park and Swan River beyond. Simplicity and clarity of spaces were pursued by the architect, developing a building form that, from the street, floats lightly over the ground, being sympathetic to the streetscape and understating its actual scale.

The architectural language of the street elevation evokes soft references to its adjoining landscape via an apparent single column branching to support a cantilevered aluminium box. This striking element and beautifully detailed fluid form mimics the gumtrees in the foreground and offers the occupants a soft framed outlook of warm, organic textures mimicking that of the limestone caves on the cliffs beyond is further enhanced by the selected materiality palette.

The design cleverly maximizes the opportunities to experience and enjoy the views, providing privacy from passing traffic through a series of landscaped courts and detailed screens. The upper level accommodation of bedrooms and ensuites continues to address the site masterfully with outlooks in every room strategically framed to capture river glimpses and invite quality sun and breeze.

A muted restrained colour and materiality palette reflecting the textures and tones of the site is beautifully detailed and fully resolved.  The architectural and interior detailing of this project should be applauded. Fundamental passive solar design principles were further strengthened by maximizing natural light and ventilation throughout all spaces within the home, thus vastly minimizing the dependence on energy demanding artificial lighting, heating and cooling.
